Find Your Power

For the past several months, I’ve been involved in my own personal pity party. How did I get here? Why is my house not the house of my dreams? Why am I financially strapped yet once again? There are no answers I want to hear to these questions because then I would have to accept responsibility for my choices.

It is so easy to let depression take hold when you’re constantly looking at life from a perspective of past choices that could have been better, but it is not productive. This is what Eckhart Tolle in his book The Power of Now refers to as letting “[the mind] use you.” I refer to this concept as over thinking. Have you ever spent so much time going over a problem in your mind that you find yourself obsessing and sinking under the weight of the thoughts? Not finding solutions, only reliving the what if’s? Before long this creates a downward vortex that pulls you under.

Pulling away from these negative thoughts—make no mistake, these are negative thoughts—is difficult, but it is possible. The first step is to stay within the present, pushing back the thoughts of the past. Accept who you are in this moment and delight in all the wonderful things that are you. Find happiness in small things. This will not change the past because it can’t be done, unless you have a time machine. So, find strength in the present and enjoy it. Embrace all the spectacular aspects of life.

I have my health, my skills as a writer, and my friends and family. That is so much more than others have. I will accept my destiny and find my path. I hope this will inspire someone who is struggling to find a way through the dark tunnel and into the light. It’s all about one step at a time.
